Curvier Spines Help Women Cope with Pregnancy
Thursday, December 13, 2007
Researchers say that women's curvier spines than men is a product of evolution to help them cope up with pregnancy. Experts from the Harvard University say that our upright-walking ancestors would have been crippled by back pain, if without the extra bend in the spine. This theory was strengthened when the difference was spotted in the female remains of a prehistoric "relative" of humans, the Australopithecus.
"Without the adaptation, pregnancy would have placed a heavier burden on back muscles, causing considerable pain and fatigue and possibly limiting foraging capacity and the ability to escape from predators.Link
"Yet our research shows their spines have evolved to make pregnancy safer and less painful than it might have been if these adaptations had not occurred."
